You can get a surety bond in Oklahoma from a licensed insurance broker or agent, from a surety company's online portal, or through a specialty surety market if your credit is under 700. For most license bonds (auto dealer, contractor trade, notary, security guard) you don't need an office visit. You apply online, and the signed bond arrives by email the same day, ready to file with the state agency that asked for it.
Where you should buy depends on three things: what kind of bond it is, how good your credit is, and whether the bond is the only thing the license or contract asks you for. Here is how I'd sort it out if you called our office.
First, find out exactly which bond you need
The agency or party that requires the bond is called the obligee. They decide the bond type and the amount, not you and not us. Before you shop, get these from them in writing:
- The exact bond name (for example, "Used Motor Vehicle Dealer" or "Plumbing Contractor")
- The bond amount
- Whether it must be on their own form
- Where it gets filed, and by when
That last one catches people. The OMMA grower bond, for example, has to be on OMMA's own form, and renewals are due before the 30-day mark ahead of expiration, not on the expiration date (OAC 442:10-5-3.3). Miss that and the license lapses even though you "had a bond."
The four places you can buy a surety bond
| Where | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| A local independent broker | Any bond, plus the insurance that usually comes with it | Make sure they write bonds every week, not once a year |
| A surety's online portal | Standard license bonds with good credit | You're on your own if the form or the obligee name is wrong |
| A specialty market | Credit under 700, or a bond in another state | Higher premium, so compare first |
| A surety company directly | Large contract bonds for established contractors | Many won't take a small license bond on its own |
Your county clerk and the state agency that requires the bond don't sell it. People call them first all the time. They'll tell you the amount, then send you to a broker.
What buying one looks like at our office
Most of the bonds we write start and finish online. You pick your bond, answer a short application, see the price before you pay, and the executed bond plus the Power of Attorney letter show up in your email the same day. Because nothing needs a signature in person, we bond businesses in Tulsa and across Oklahoma the same way we bond people here in Oklahoma City.
Need a surety bond?
License and permit bonds issued online, with the signed bond emailed the same day. Credit under 700 still gets bonded.
Get Bonded TodayIf your credit won't qualify online, or the bond is for another state, we still place it through our specialty market. It's the same idea with a different underwriter.
A few Oklahoma bond amounts, so you know you have the right one
These are the standard amounts listed on our bond pages. Always confirm with the obligee, because cities and agencies can change them.
- Used Motor Vehicle Dealer: $25,000 (every dealer bond)
- Mechanical (HVAC), plumbing and electrical contractor license: $5,000 each (contractor license bonds)
- City of OKC occupation bond for used auto, trailer, salvage and parts dealers: $1,000
- OMMA commercial grower: $50,000 minimum, renewals only for now, since Oklahoma is closed to new grower licenses until August 1, 2028 (OMMA bond guide)
The bond amount is not what you pay. You pay a premium, a small part of that amount, set mostly by your credit. The full list with buy buttons is on our Oklahoma surety bonds page.
The mistake that costs people a second trip
The bond is often only half of what a license or contract asks for. A contractor bidding a job usually needs general liability with a certificate too, and often an additional insured endorsement. A used car dealer's lender and tag agent will ask for garage liability proof. If you buy the bond one place and the insurance somewhere else, you end up chasing two companies for paperwork on the same deadline.
That's the real reason to use a broker who does both. One call, the bond and the certificate go out the same day, and you file everything at once.
Questions we get asked
Where can I get a surety bond the same day in Oklahoma?
From a broker or surety that issues online. Most license and permit bonds are approved in minutes, and the signed bond and Power of Attorney arrive by email the same day.
Can I get a surety bond with bad credit?
Yes. Credit under 700 goes to a specialty market instead of the fastest online option. It usually costs more, but the bond is the same bond the state accepts.
Is a surety bond the same as insurance?
No. Insurance protects you. A surety bond protects the public or the agency that required it, and if the surety pays a claim, it can come back to you for the money.
Do I have to go to an office to get bonded?
No. Everything happens online and by email, so where you are in Oklahoma doesn't matter.
